Volkswagen ID.3

Charging curve · consumption · motorway range

We model 2 versions of the Volkswagen ID.3. The ID.3 Pro S 79 kWh (2025 on) has 79 kWh of usable battery and peaks at 185 kW on a DC charger. In this app's model it uses about 165 Wh/km at a steady 100 km/h and 240 Wh/km at 130, so 45% more energy per kilometre buys you 30 km/h more speed. Weigh that against a 26-minute 10-80% charging stop and you have the whole question of how fast to drive.

Which version you have matters

These share a name and not much else that a trip planner cares about. Pack size sets how far you go between stops, and the curve sets how long each one takes.

DC charging curve

Charging power against state of charge, on a charger fast enough not to be the limit. Peak power is 185 kW, but it has halved by about 67% state of charge. That is why a short stop low down the curve usually beats a long one near the top.

Consumption and range by cruise speed

Steady motorway cruising on flat road in mild weather, from the fitted model Wh/km = 57 + 0.0108 · v² for the ID.3 Pro S 79 kWh (2025 on). The “usable range” column is the honest one for trip planning: it is 100% down to 10%, because nobody arrives on empty.

What the model does not include

Where these numbers come from

VW MEB platform curve: holds peak to ~30% SoC, then near-linear taper. Curated from Fastned model guide + P3 Charging Index style tests. Fitted to the 2023 Pro. The lightest body on this pack, so it sets the floor the heavier 120 kW MEB cars are measured against.

VW MEB, 2025-on pack and rear motor: a taller peak than the 120/135 kW generation and a much later taper, so these want a single long stop where the older MEB cars wanted two short ones. Curve fitted to the 10-80% time and average power published by EV Database, cross-checked against the manufacturer's own charging figures. Fitted to the MY26 Pro S: 185 kW, the highest peak of any MEB car here, and the 160 km/h limiter the whole ID.3 range shares.

What speed should you actually drive?

It depends on your route, on where the fast chargers happen to be and how the legal limits fall. Plan the real trip and the simulator will sweep every cruise speed against this car's curves and tell you which one arrives first.
